Celebrating Sporting Excellence: Karate, Chess, and Table Tennis at Surana College

Sports have always been an integral part of student life at Surana College, serving as a powerful tool to instil discipline, teamwork, and resilience. This academic year, the campus witnessed three remarkable intercollegiate sporting events—Karate, Chess, and Table Tennis—that not only celebrated athletic excellence but also reinforced the college’s commitment to holistic student development.

On 24th August 2025, the campus hosted the All-India National Level Open Karate Championship 2025-26, a landmark event that drew a record-breaking 650 participants from across the country. Colleges from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and several renowned martial arts clubs came together to showcase their skills. The championship featured kata, kumite, and team events across multiple categories, offering a platform for young athletes to test their mettle. Guided by the vision of promoting martial arts and encouraging cultural exchange, the event emphasized physical wellness, mental toughness, and sportsmanship. The presence of veteran karateka Mr. Bhargav Reddy, a multiple-time national and international medallist, added prestige and inspiration to the championship.

Just days later, the spotlight shifted from combat to strategy with the “Checkmate Your Future” PUC Inter-Collegiate Chess Tournament, held on 29th August 2025. Organized on National Sports Day, the tournament welcomed 60 students and coaches from seven leading colleges, including Aurobindo, SVM, MES, and St. Joseph’s. The event focused on nurturing logical reasoning, concentration, and decision-making, proving that mental sports hold equal importance in shaping well-rounded individuals. Young talents such as Pranav Nagesh and Apoorva Narayan emerged champions, while others like Charvi and Thejas K impressed with their strategic brilliance. Beyond medals and trophies, the event fostered camaraderie and showcased how chess transcends mere competition—it sharpens the mind and builds character.

The sporting celebrations continued with the PUC Inter-Collegiate Table Tennis Tournament, held on 3rd and 4th September 2025. This two-day event attracted 150 participants from various colleges, transforming the Surana College auditorium into an arena of fast-paced rallies and electrifying performances. The tournament featured boys’ and girls’ singles, doubles, and mixed doubles matches, all conducted under the official rules of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI). The competition highlighted precision, agility, and concentration, with winners like Diganth Gowda and Jahnavi M standing out for their exceptional play. The event was graced by Shri. Palaksha T, an esteemed educationist and award-winning principal, whose presence motivated students to balance academics with sports.

Together, these three events painted a vibrant picture of Surana College’s sporting spirit. While Karate showcased discipline and physical resilience, Chess emphasized mental acuity, and Table Tennis celebrated agility and teamwork. More importantly, all three tournaments promoted cultural exchange, identified budding talents, and reinforced the values of perseverance and fair play.

As the cheers fade and the trophies find their place on shelves, the true legacy of these events lies in the inspiration they leave behind. Surana College has once again proved that sports are not just extracurricular activities—they are life lessons in motion.
